What to expect at Al-Sahaby Lane Restaurant

Al-Sahaby Lane is the rooftop restaurant of the Nefertiti Hotel, and the view is the reason to come: you dine under an open sky about thirty metres from the illuminated pylon of Luxor Temple, close enough to read the hieroglyphs on Ramesses II's obelisk. The menu is broader than the average local place — a mix of Egyptian classics, grills, pasta and a few European dishes — reflecting its Nefertiti Hotel clientele. Quality is good rather than exceptional, but the setting is unmatched anywhere in Luxor.

Start with the mezze mixed plate or a bowl of lentil soup, then take a grill (mixed grill for two around $22) or the Egyptian classics — koshari, mahshi (stuffed vegetables), or a tagen. The wine list is limited but Egyptian wines are available (Grand Marquis red is the safest choice at about $18 a bottle). Egyptian beers are cold and cheap ($3). Service can be slow when full — this is part of the deal.

Book the far corner of the terrace for the best temple view; it's usually reserved a day ahead in high season. Come around 19:30 so you catch the temple's lighting as it comes on. On Sound & Light show evenings you can sometimes hear a faint version of the narration drifting up from Karnak. The Nefertiti's rooftop bar is a good option for a post-dinner drink even if you dine elsewhere. Wear a light layer between November and February — the roof gets cool.
