Luxor is not a late-night city. The West Bank goes quiet early, because the ferries thin out and most people there are up before dawn for the balloon flights. Plan dinner on the east side and treat the west side as a daytime place.

The ferry question decides your night

The public ferry is the cheapest and most frequent way across the Nile, running every few minutes through the day. Frequency tapers later, and the last crossing is earlier than most visitors expect, so the timetable rather than the venue closing time is what ends a West Bank evening.

Private boats cross on demand and run later, but the arrangement is negotiated each time and the price depends on the boat and the hour. The road bridge south of the city is the only crossing that never stops, and it is a long way round by car.

If you are staying on the West Bank, the practical answer is to eat near your guesthouse and treat the East Bank as a daytime trip. If you are on the East Bank, you can go out late without thinking about the river at all.

Timing shifts

During Ramadan, many restaurants open after sunset and the rhythm of the whole city moves later, while alcohol service is restricted or suspended at many places. In midsummer the evening is the only comfortable part of the day, so the Corniche stays busy much later than it does in winter. What Luxor is not

Luxor has no club district and no bar strip of the kind found in larger resort cities. Evening entertainment is dinner, a walk, a cafe, or a monument seen under lights, and that is the honest menu.

Alcohol is available at licensed hotels and a number of restaurants, mostly on the East Bank, but it is not a central part of the local evening, and many places do not serve it at all. If that matters to your plans, confirm before you choose a table.

For most visitors this is not a loss. The reason to be in Luxor at night is the temperature, the river and the lit stone, not the nightlife.
