What to expect at Luxor Souq

The Souq is the beating commercial heart of the East Bank, a partially covered warren of alleys running north from Luxor Temple behind Sharia al-Karnak. Half of it is aimed squarely at tourists — alabaster souvenirs, papyrus pictures, scarab keyrings — but the other half is where Luxor actually shops, for fresh spices, dried hibiscus for karkade tea, cheap cotton galabeyas, silverware, and household goods. The two halves interlock; ten metres apart you can go from a scented spice stall to a stack of Chinese plastic sandals.

The best strategy is to walk the length once without buying anything, get a sense of what's on offer, then come back for what interested you. The good spice merchants can be identified by locals shopping there — try the shops on the northern end towards Sharia al-Mahatta. Silver is sold by weight ($1-2 per gram plus workmanship). Alabaster is genuine but the mass-market pieces are made just outside Luxor by the truckload; better small ateliers exist on the West Bank. Bargaining is expected — start at 40% of the asked price and settle around 60%.

Come in the evening after 18:00 when it cools down, the lights come on, and locals emerge to shop. Fridays open only after 14:00 because of prayers. Have a mint tea in one of the little cafés inside the souq — they'll bring it to you while you shop. Watch for pickpockets in the crowded sections, though violent crime is essentially unheard of. Great for gifts and a genuinely enjoyable evening stroll.
