Karnak lies to the northeast, and Al-Awameyah sits further out. Most of the city's hotels, shops and services are on this side.

The West Bank is the strip of fields, villages and desert edge on the far side of the Nile from Luxor city, sitting roughly four kilometres from the centre as the river runs. The river is the boundary that matters: everything here is reached by the public ferry, a private boat, or the bridge, and once across, the road west climbs toward the desert sites rather than through a grid of streets.

Karnak is a district on the East Bank, three kilometres north of the centre. It sits inland from the Nile, behind the riverfront strip, and the temple complex of the same name is the fixed point the area is built around. The river runs along the western edge; the rest is streets that carry traffic from the centre northwards.

Luxor City Center is the commercial core of the East Bank, set back from the river behind the Corniche al-Nil. The Nile lies to the west, and Luxor Temple and Luxor railway station are both inside this core. It is the point the rest of the east bank is measured from, which is why it reads as the centre on any map rather than an edge.

Corniche al-Nil is the riverfront stretch on the East Bank, running along the Nile in the centre of Luxor. It sits at kilometre zero, the core of the city, with Luxor City Center and the wider East Bank as its neighbours. The public ferry, private boats and the bridge all cross from here, so the river is not a backdrop but the working edge of the area.

Medinat Habu is a West Bank area on the south side of the river, about eight kilometres from the centre, which sits on the opposite bank. It takes its name from the temple complex at its core, Medinet Habu, and the neighbouring village area. The river is the main dividing line here: reach the centre and the railway station only by ferry, private boat or the bridge.
