Gezira

Gezira (El Gezira or Al Gezira), written Gezirat al-Bairat in many addresses, is the village on the West Bank beside the public ferry landing. Ramla, its riverside part, runs along the Nile next to the landing. Many of the West Bank's guesthouses and small hotels are here, a lot of them run by local families.

Gezira and Ramla have the most restaurants, cafés and shops on the West Bank, and the most going on in the evening, all around the ferry landing. The public ferry runs around the clock, with fewer departures late at night, so dinner, the station or Luxor Temple on the East Bank are a short walk and a crossing away. The monuments are a drive inland, and taxis and tuk-tuks are easy to find around the village.

Many places to stay here have a Nile view, and some look across the fields to the Theban mountain, which is lit up at night. Views vary from one property to the next, so check the listing photos before you book.

Gezira and Ramla are the best places on the West Bank to walk out onto the riverside corniche for a sunset felucca ride on the Nile. Agree the price and the length of the ride with the boatman before you set off.
