What to expect at Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Flight

The sunrise balloon flight over the Theban West Bank is one of the most popular experiences in Luxor, and rightly so — for about an hour you drift over the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, the Ramesseum, Medinet Habu and the green cultivation strip along the Nile, with the sun rising over the East Bank. About a dozen operators run flights daily (weather permitting) with take-off around 5:30 AM in winter and 5:00 in summer.

The morning goes: hotel pickup around 4:30 AM, motorboat across the Nile, breakfast at the launch field, then boarding one of the big balloons that hold 16-20 passengers in a partitioned basket. Flight time is 45-60 minutes depending on wind, drifting westwards from the launch field towards the desert. Landing is anywhere the pilot finds a suitable field, followed by a bumpy pickup and return to your hotel by around 9:00 AM.

Book through a reputable operator (Sindbad, Magic Horizon and Hod Hod Soliman have the best safety records) and pay by card where possible for consumer protection. Prices range from $85 for a shared basket to $200+ for private flights. Wind is the deciding factor: about 15% of scheduled flights are cancelled the night before or on the morning. Wear layers — it's cold before dawn and warms fast once the sun is up. Bring a strap for your camera or phone; you're standing and the basket edge is waist-high.
