What Karnak is like

Karnak is the area of Luxor's East Bank around the Karnak temple complex, north of the city centre. It is quieter than the centre, with residential streets, the riverside road and a handful of hotels from simple guesthouses to a large Nile-front resort. Luxor Temple and the station are a few kilometres south, along the Corniche or the Avenue of Sphinxes.

Why stay here: you can reach Karnak on foot at opening time and return in the middle of the day, when the heat is highest. Evenings are calmer than in the city centre.

What to expect: local restaurants, cafés and shops nearby, with less choice than the city centre, which is a short taxi ride away. Pavements and shade are limited on some stretches, which matters if you plan to get around on foot, especially in summer.

  • Karnak entrance: the visitor centre and ticket office are at Karnak Temple Square on the west side of the complex, facing the river road.
  • Into the centre: a short taxi ride, or a longer walk south along the Corniche or the Avenue of Sphinxes to Luxor Temple.
  • To the West Bank: a taxi to the ferry or boat landings in the centre, or a drive over the northern road bridge, the closer of Luxor's two bridges to Karnak.
  • Opening hours: winter hours, from 30 October 2026, are 06:00 to 17:00 daily, set by the Luxor antiquities administration. The official ticket site, egymonuments.com, lists last entry at 16:00 (checked October 2026). Check on the day, as hours can change on holidays and in Ramadan.
