Three things are worth sorting in advance. Everything else in Luxor can be arranged the night before, or on the day.

Take the heat seriously Aswan runs hotter than Luxor for much of the year and the middle of the day is punishing. Build the plan around early and late outdoor time, with the indoor or shaded stretch in between. →

The two days, hour by hour

05:30 Leave the hotel for Luxor station The station is on the East Bank, so most city centre hotels are a short ride away. Being early matters more here than on a normal sightseeing day, because a missed southbound train ends the trip.
06:00 Board the southbound train Sit on the east side of the carriage where possible, since the Nile and the desert edge alternate through the windows. The ride is the transfer, not the attraction, so treat it as reading or sleep time.
09:30 Arrive Aswan and head for the river Aswan station sits close to the Corniche al-Nil, which makes the first orientation easy. Walk the corniche before the heat builds and use it to judge how much time you really have.
10:15 Boat to Philae and the temple Philae is the single strongest reason to make this trip, since the island setting has no equivalent in Luxor. The boat crossing is part of the visit, so allow for waiting and for the return.
12:30 Lunch and shade This is the hottest stretch and the right moment to stop moving. Eat indoors or under cover, drink more water than feels necessary, and let the worst of the afternoon pass.
14:00 Nubian Museum or the Unfinished Obelisk Pick one, not both, given the return train. The Nubian Museum is the better choice in high heat because it is entirely indoors and covers material Luxor does not.
15:30 Corniche and the souq A short, low-effort loop along the river and through the market fills the gap before the station. Keep it close to the station so the return leg is never at risk.
17:00 Northbound train to Luxor Confirm the departure on the board rather than trusting a printed plan. Arriving back on the East Bank in the evening leaves the walk or short ride to the hotel straightforward.

If your two days look different

For travellers who want Aswan without the rush Swap the day trip for a one-way southbound train and stay the night, then return to Luxor later. Philae, the Nubian Museum and the corniche each get proper time instead of a shared afternoon.
For anyone who would rather stay on the Luxor corridor Replace Aswan with Edfu and Esna, which sit on the same line and cost far less of the day in transit. Dendera can be added from Luxor without touching the train timetable at all.
For a slower second day Cut the afternoon West Bank tombs and add the Luxor Museum or Mummification Museum instead. Indoor time in the middle of the day is the sensible move in the hotter months.

What we would drop first

Two days is enough only if you are willing to leave things out. In the order we would cut them:

  1. The Unfinished Obelisk: Drop it first if the clocks are tight: it is a single granite quarry with limited shade, and Philae repays the time better.
  2. The Aswan souq: The market is pleasant but not the reason to travel this far, and Luxor's own souq covers similar ground on a normal evening.
  3. One of the two West Bank tomb sites: Running both the Tombs of the Nobles and Deir El Medina in one afternoon thins out both visits.
  4. The Colossi stop: It is a few minutes at the roadside, and skipping it is inexpensive to reach if the ferry queue is long.

Can Aswan be done as a day trip from Luxor?+

It can, but only on the train and only with an early start and a late return, leaving two to three hours in Aswan itself. That is enough for Philae and one other stop, not for Aswan properly. Anyone wanting the Nubian Museum, Philae and the corniche at a normal pace should stay overnight instead.

How long is the train from Luxor to Aswan?+

The journey is roughly three to four hours depending on the service and the number of stops. Schedules are published by the operator and change seasonally, so check the operator's page for your date rather than relying on a timetable copied from elsewhere. Confirm the return leg at the same time as the outbound one.

Is Philae Temple worth the trip on its own?+

Philae is the strongest single argument for going south, because the island setting and the moved temple have no equivalent in Luxor. It does require a boat crossing from the landing, which adds time and a separate arrangement. Hours and boat operations change seasonally, so check before you travel.

What if the train times do not work on my date?+

Then the day trip does not work, and no amount of planning fixes it. A private car covers the same road but turns the day into a long drive in both directions. The realistic alternative is to keep the day in Luxor or take an Edfu and Esna day on the same corridor.

When should the Aswan day be scheduled within a Luxor trip?+

Put it after a rest day rather than straight after arrival, since it starts before dawn and ends in the evening. It also suits the middle of a longer stay rather than a short one. A two day Luxor itinerary has no room for it at all.
