Best Day Trips from Luxor: Destinations, Travel Times and Who They Suit

Distances are road routes from central Luxor, calculated from OpenStreetMap; driving times are free-flow estimates. Real journeys are longer: allow extra time for checkpoints, town traffic and stops.

Good pairings

Dendera and Abydos (north): possible in one long day with an early start, but it is mostly road time. Choose one if you want time at the walls; the Abydos guide explains the trade-off.
Esna and Edfu (south): a natural full day, with Esna on the way.
Edfu and Kom Ombo: best on a journey south to Aswan, ending with a night there.

Do not combine a northern and a southern trip in one day: they are in opposite directions.

Better as an overnight stay

Aswan: a long return in a day. Staying at least one night lets you see Philae, the river and the town without spending most of the day travelling.
Abu Simbel: much further south, beyond Aswan. Plan it from Aswan, not as a day trip from Luxor.
Hurghada and the Red Sea coast: about 290 km by road; treat it as a separate stay.

The West Bank is not a day trip

The Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu are across the river within Luxor. They are a full local day, not an excursion. See Two days in Luxor without renting a car.

Arranging a day trip

Choose the direction first, north or south.
Book a car and driver or a licensed tour the day before, and agree the stops, the waiting time and the return time.
Check opening hours for your date, which change with the season and on holidays.
Start early, especially between May and September, and carry water.
