What to expect at Temple of Khnum at Esna
Only one part of the Temple of Khnum at Esna survives — a single free-standing Roman hypostyle hall — but it's a stunning one, and a major restoration project by a joint Egyptian-German team has transformed it in the last five years. The hall sits nine metres below the modern street level of Esna, in a great excavated pit surrounded by the town, because the alluvial deposits of two thousand years buried it. You descend a staircase into a cool, echoing space of twenty-four columns.
The ceiling is the reason to come. Beneath centuries of soot from bird droppings and cooking fires, the restorers have uncovered painted astronomical scenes, zodiacs, and dedicatory inscriptions of Roman emperors from Claudius to Decius. The colours — turquoise, red, ochre, gold — look freshly applied. Each column capital is different (a rare feature in Egyptian architecture). The reliefs on the walls repeat the standard cosmic scenes, but the ceiling here is genuinely world-class.
Esna is only 45 minutes south of Luxor by taxi, making it a much easier half-day than Dendera or Edfu. Most Nile cruises pass through the Esna lock but very few stop, so the temple is quiet. Combine with the small local souq around the temple pit — a proper Upper Egyptian market with almost no tourism. About $40 return for a taxi with waiting time. Bring a wide-angle lens to catch the ceiling.
