Summer (May to September)
Average highs are around 38 to 41°C.
- Loose, light, breathable clothes that cover shoulders and arms: covered skin stays cooler in direct sun.
- A wide-brimmed hat; a cap leaves the neck and ears exposed.
- High-factor sunscreen and lip balm with sun protection.
- Good sunglasses.
- A refillable water bottle, and oral rehydration sachets.
- Light sandals for the hotel and evenings.
Winter (December to February)
Average highs are around 22 to 25°C, but average lows are around 8 to 9°C.
- Layers: a warm jacket or fleece for evenings, early starts and balloon flights.
- Long trousers and a long-sleeved top.
- Sun protection is still needed in the middle of the day.
Spring and autumn
Warm days and milder nights: light clothes plus one warm layer. In spring, a scarf or buff helps against wind-blown dust.
Footwear
- Closed walking shoes with good grip: sites have uneven paving, sand, steps and steep ramps into the tombs.
- Light sandals or slip-ons for the hotel, the pool and evening walks.
Clothing and dress
Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) is respectful in town and needed for mosques; women should also carry a scarf to cover their hair in a mosque. A long, light scarf is useful for sun, dust and cool evenings.
Day bag
- Water.
- Hat and sunscreen.
- Tissues and hand sanitiser.
- Small notes for tips and fares (see Tipping in Luxor).
- A copy of your passport.
- Your phone with offline maps and your hotel's location saved.
Health
- Personal medicines, with the prescription.
- A small first aid kit: plasters, blister patches, pain relief and diarrhoea treatment.
- Insect repellent, especially near irrigated fields on the West Bank.
Charging and plugs
Egypt uses 220 V and European two-pin plugs (types C and F). Bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug, and a power bank for long days out.
What to leave at home
- A drone: only with prior permission from the Egyptian authorities; confirm with the Egyptian embassy or consulate before you travel.
- Heavy jeans for summer.
- More than one pair of heavy shoes.
