It takes its name from the temple complex at its core, Medinet Habu, and the neighbouring village area. The river is the main dividing line here: reach the centre and the railway station only by ferry, private boat or the bridge.
Staying here settles one thing above all: access to the temples at Medinet Habu and Deir El Medina, which are the reason to base on this side. The trade-off is distance from the centre. Every crossing of the river takes time, and the ferry, boats and bridge each work differently, so plans that depend on the east bank need slack built in.
Mornings begin early, because the sites open and the day heats. Visitors move by road on the West Bank or cross by ferry, private boat or the bridge. Evenings are quiet: the area is residential in parts, with New Qurna and Al-Qurna nearby, and the centre's restaurants and shops are a crossing away rather than a walk.
This suits travellers who want the West Bank temples without the crowds of the main circuit, and who accept that the centre is not on the doorstep. It does not suit anyone who wants the station, the corniche and the main hotel strip within walking distance. Those travellers should base in Luxor city on the east bank.
