Was Sie in Mummification Museum erwartet

The Mummification Museum is small — you could see it in half an hour — but it is remarkably focused, and the only museum in Egypt dedicated to the process of embalming as a religious and technical practice. It sits below Corniche level next to the Nile, opposite the Mina Palace Hotel, and unfolds as a single semi-circular corridor that walks you through the seventy-day mummification process step by step, with the actual instruments used at each stage.

You'll see natron salts (used to desiccate the body), the small hook used to remove the brain through the nose, canopic jars for the four internal organs, linen wrappings, resin, and amulets that were placed between the layers of bandage. A well-preserved mummy — Masaharta, a High Priest of Amun — lies in a central case. Animal mummies (cats, ibises, a crocodile, even a fish) are displayed together to show that mummification wasn't only human. Panels explain the theology: why the body had to be preserved for the ka to return to.

Skip if you're not interested in the technical side of Egyptian religion; make time if you are — it's genuinely educational and cheap. Best paired with the Luxor Museum, a ten-minute walk further north along the Corniche. Evening opening is more atmospheric and much cooler. Excellent for children old enough to handle the subject; the displays are neither gory nor sanitized.
