Luxor Museum is the perfect antidote to the sensory overload of the Cairo Museum: a compact, exquisitely curated collection of about a hundred pieces, displayed in soft, dramatic lighting against dark walls. It was designed in the early 1970s explicitly for connoisseurship — you're meant to look at each object for a long time — and the objects themselves are outstanding. Nearly everything here came from Karnak, Luxor Temple, or the West Bank tombs.
Two royal mummies (Ahmose I and probably Ramesses I) rest in a dedicated darkened room. The Karnak Cachette Hall on the ground floor holds a wall of statuary discovered in a great pit under Karnak's Seventh Pylon in 1904, including a stunning schist statue of Thutmose III. Upstairs, the Wall of Akhenaten reassembles hundreds of talatat blocks from his dismantled temple, with the pharaoh, Nefertiti and their daughters carved in the strange, elongated Amarna style. There is also an entire gallery on the New Kingdom military — chariots, weapons, and a beautifully preserved leather armour set from Tutankhamun's tomb.
Best visited in the evening session (17:00-21:00 winter) when it's less crowded and the low light suits the objects perfectly. Two hours is right; three if you like to linger. The museum shop is one of the better ones on the East Bank. It's on the Corniche about a kilometre north of Luxor Temple — a pleasant walk along the river. Included in both Luxor Passes.
