Karnak is not a single temple but a city of temples spread over two square kilometres, dedicated principally to Amun-Ra, the state god of the New Kingdom. Every pharaoh worth remembering added a pylon, a chapel, a colossus or an obelisk here for more than two thousand years, layering the site into the most extraordinary architectural palimpsest on earth. It served as Egypt's spiritual engine room while Thebes was capital, and even after the court moved north the priests of Amun remained a rival power to the throne itself.
You enter down the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes and through the unfinished First Pylon, and the scale hits immediately in the Great Hypostyle Hall: 134 sandstone columns, the central twelve rising 21 metres, their capitals carved as open papyrus. Beyond the hall lies the sacred lake, the obelisk of Hatshepsut, the granite sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus, and the ruined Festival Hall of Thutmose III with its unusual tent-pole columns. The open-air museum at the northwest corner holds the reassembled White Chapel of Senusret I.
Come at opening at 6:00 to have the Hypostyle Hall almost to yourself for an hour; the light through the clerestory windows is at its best then too. Allow three hours minimum, four if you want the open-air museum (extra ticket). The Luxor Pass covers entry. Skip the midday heat between noon and 15:00. The Sound & Light show is touristy but worth doing once if you're staying multiple nights.
