Was Sie in Luxor Temple erwartet

Luxor Temple sits right in the heart of the modern city, its First Pylon opening onto Sharia al-Karnak and a 3-kilometre avenue of sphinxes that once linked it to Karnak. Built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, it was the setting for the annual Opet Festival, when the sacred barques of Amun, Mut and Khonsu were carried in procession from Karnak. Layer upon layer of later occupation is visible: a Roman legionary chapel, a Christian church built inside the sanctuary, and the still-active Abu al-Haggag mosque perched on top of the ancient columns.

The single standing obelisk of Ramesses II (its twin is in the Place de la Concorde in Paris) fronts the pylon, flanked by seated colossi. Pass through into the peristyle court of Ramesses II with its Osiride statues, then the elegant colonnade of Amenhotep III with fourteen 19-metre columns, and finally the sun court and dark inner sanctuaries. Roman frescoes in the imperial cult chamber survive in faded ochre. The Avenue of Sphinxes stretches away to the north, now fully excavated and open to walk.

Go at night. Luxor Temple is exceptional after dark, when floodlighting sculpts the reliefs and the crowds thin. The gates stay open until 22:00. If you can only do one visit, aim for around 18:00 so you catch both daylight and floodlit modes. It's a five-minute walk from most East Bank hotels along the Corniche, and the entrance queue rarely takes more than ten minutes.
