Deir el-Medina was the workers' village whose inhabitants — carpenters, stonemasons, draughtsmen, scribes — cut and decorated all the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens for about four centuries. Because these were skilled state employees they were literate, well paid in grain, and buried in their own beautifully painted tombs just up the slope from their houses. The village is one of the most complete workers' settlements anywhere in the ancient world: about seventy houses, a temple, and thousands of ostraca (potsherds with writing) recovered here have given us more detail on daily life than any other site in Egypt.
You walk down the central street with its low mudbrick and stone walls to about waist height, seeing the layout of each two-to-four-room house, the storage cellars, and the mud-brick benches. On the ridge above, a small Ptolemaic temple to Hathor and Maat survives well. But the highlights are the tombs of Sennedjem (TT1) and Inherkha (TT359) — tiny painted chapels with the deepest, most saturated colour of any tomb in Egypt because they were sealed and undisturbed until modern times. Sennedjem's underworld scenes and Inherkha's cat killing Apophis are unforgettable.
Because it's away from the main tourist loop, Deir el-Medina is delightfully quiet — often you'll be alone in the tombs with just the guardian. Tickets include the village, the temple and the two star tombs. Combine with Valley of the Queens (just around the ridge). Take a small torch; the tomb ceilings are close to your head. Photography inside is not permitted, so put the phone away and just look.
