Was Sie in Valley of the Queens erwartet
The Valley of the Queens holds around ninety tombs of royal wives, princes and princesses of the Ramesside dynasties, cut into a smaller wadi about a kilometre south of the Valley of the Kings. Because the workmen of Deir el-Medina serviced both valleys, the artistic quality is comparable — but the queens' tombs are smaller, more intimate, and much less visited. The standard ticket includes three tombs, usually Amunherkhepshef (QV55), Titi (QV52) and Khaemwaset (QV44).
The showstopper is separate: Nefertari's tomb (QV66), reopened after a decade-long conservation project, requires a $17 premium ticket and admits only 150 visitors per day for ten minutes each. Inside, the vivid paintings of the Great Royal Wife of Ramesses II look freshly done — cobalt ceilings dotted with gold stars, Nefertari's white gown, Isis leading her by the hand. The princes' tombs are moving in a different way: Amunherkhepshef shows a nine-year-old boy in the ceremonial sidelock, being presented by his father Ramesses III to the gods of the underworld.
Nefertari's tomb is worth the premium price if you have any interest in Egyptian art at all — it is arguably the single finest painted room in the country. Book it first thing on arrival at the visitor centre; the daily quota fills by 10:00 in high season. The valley is on the standard West Bank taxi loop, so combine with Medinet Habu (5 minutes away) and the workers' village at Deir el-Medina. Photography is not permitted inside Nefertari's tomb.
