Why event-timing matters more than you think
Beyond the obvious Christmas and February peaks, Luxor has half a dozen specific event dates that spike hotel demand hard for two or three nights. Miss them if you want value, or lock them in six weeks ahead if you specifically want to attend. The five-stars respond fastest — the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor and Steigenberger Nile Palace push rates up 20-30% for event weekends even outside high season.
Mid-market and budget hotels follow more slowly. New Pola Hotel Luxor, Gaddis Hotel and Emilio Hotel typically hold rate but sell out completely two weeks ahead of major events. Apartments (Karnak Flats, Al Gezera Apartments, Royal Apartments Luxor) are the last availability to disappear. This guide walks the actual event dates that matter.
The Egyptian Marathon: early February
The Egyptian Marathon runs the first Friday of February most years, starting and finishing near Hatshepsut's temple with a course that loops the West Bank. Roughly 2,000 international runners and 1,000 Egyptian runners take part, plus half-marathon and 10K distances. The full field, families and running clubs put maybe 4,000 event-related visitors in Luxor for the weekend.
Hotels affected most: Jolie Ville Hotel & Spa Kings Island Luxor (chosen for its location and pool access for recovery), Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, and the West Bank boutiques including Al Moudira Hotel and Nile Valley Hotel & Restaurant. Book ten weeks out if you want to run. Book six weeks out if you want to avoid runners entirely — the standard hotel breakfast at 5am is chaos, and the ferry from 4am is packed with runners heading to the start.
Abu Haggag Mawlid: shifts each year
The Mawlid of Sidi Abu al-Haggag, Luxor's biggest religious festival, is celebrated at Luxor Temple two weeks before the start of Ramadan. Because Ramadan shifts eleven days earlier each year, the mawlid shifts too. In 2026, it falls around late January to early February. In 2027, mid-January. Always check specific dates the month before travel.
This is a domestic-driven event with tens of thousands of Egyptian visitors and a huge street procession featuring model boats hoisted through Luxor Temple's precinct. Foreign hotel rates rise modestly (10-15%) but availability at city-center hotels tightens sharply for two nights. The Corniche and Luxor Temple area become impassable to vehicles for the peak evening. Book Al-Awameyah or the West Bank if you want to sleep undisturbed; book city-center or Corniche al-Nil if you want to be inside the atmosphere.
Sun alignments at Karnak: 21 December and 21 June
Twice a year the rising sun aligns down the main axis of Karnak Temple, lighting the sanctuary at dawn. December 21 (winter solstice) is the more famous and better-attended event because the weather is cool and photogenic. June 21 (summer solstice) is technically the more dramatic alignment but attendance is lower because of the heat.
December 21 draws maybe 500-800 additional visitors to Luxor specifically for the dawn — enough to affect Karnak-adjacent hotels for two nights. Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor and hotels along the Corniche al-Nil see 15-20% rate spikes. Access to Karnak from 4:30am on the morning requires early tickets, sold ahead through hotels and specific operators. If you are in Luxor on this date anyway, budget $30-50 for a special early-access ticket and be at the gate by 5am.
Coptic Christmas and Coptic Easter
Coptic Christmas falls on January 7 every year and Coptic Easter usually a week or two after Western Easter. Luxor has a significant Coptic Christian community and both dates are meaningful local events. Coptic Christmas is quieter in visible celebration but affects the January mini-peak — the first week of January runs hotter on hotel rates than the second because Coptic celebrations extend the New Year period.
Rates: the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa holds at $250-280 through January 7, down to $200-220 by January 10. Al Moudira Hotel similarly. Coptic Easter mostly affects domestic tourism (Cairo Coptic families visiting relatives in Upper Egypt) rather than foreign hotel bookings, but the West Bank ferry runs busier for a weekend and traffic on the Luxor-Qena road slows.
October Wafaa al-Nil festival
The Nile Flood festival (Wafaa al-Nil) around mid-October is a cultural event more than a tourist draw, but it produces two nights of Corniche activity and modest hotel demand around the celebration. Cultural programming at the Luxor Cultural Palace, evening river illuminations, and school events across the city. Foreign visitors barely register it; the atmosphere is genuinely local.
This coincides usefully with the start of the October shoulder season, when temperatures drop back to comfortable 30-33C daytime highs and the first serious European visitors return. Rates at Steigenberger Nile Palace and Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor come off their August low ($75-90) toward the winter climb ($130-160) through October. If you want to catch the transition from cheap-and-empty to warm-and-lively, book the third or fourth week of October.
New Year's Eve: the single hardest night to book
December 31 is the tightest hotel night of the Luxor year. Every five-star runs a gala dinner package (Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor, Steigenberger Nile Palace, Steigenberger Resort Achti). Rates for the night alone push $350-450. Three-night minimums are standard. Al Moudira Hotel on the West Bank runs its own gala at $180 a head on top of the room, and books out fastest of any Luxor property for this night specifically.
Book in July or August at the very latest. By late September the Nile-view and pool-view rooms are gone from every five-star. If you are willing to skip the gala and book mid-market, Iberotel Luxor by JAZ, Pyramisa Hotel Luxor and Jolie Ville Hotel & Spa Kings Island Luxor all have honest New Year's Eve availability into early November at $180-240. The city-center three-stars (New Pola Hotel Luxor, Gaddis Hotel, Emilio Hotel) hold availability latest of all, closing out around mid-December at $90-130.
