Was Sie in The Ramesseum erwartet
The Ramesseum is the mortuary temple of Ramesses II — the same Ramesses who covered the Nile in monuments for sixty-six years — and though it's partially collapsed, its state of half-ruin is precisely what makes it moving. The fallen granite colossus of the pharaoh, once 18 metres tall and weighing over 1,000 tonnes, lies broken in the temple's second court. Its shattered face and the surrounding desert inspired the Diplomat Diodorus Siculus, then Napoleon's savants, and finally Shelley's sonnet Ozymandias: 'Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair.'
The temple follows the standard mortuary plan: pylons, courts, hypostyle hall, sanctuary — but nature and quake have opened it up so you can walk freely through what would have been enclosed halls. The Hypostyle Hall still has 29 of its original 48 columns standing, with painted ceilings partially preserved in the astronomical corridor. The rear storage magazines are vast mudbrick vaults, some of the oldest surviving true arches anywhere. Battle reliefs on the pylons show Ramesses at Kadesh, in chariots the size of a hand.
Fewer visitors come here than to Medinet Habu, which means you often have the place almost to yourself. It's a quieter, more atmospheric ruin — bring a notebook or a paperback of Shelley. Combine easily with Hatshepsut and Valley of the Kings as your West Bank taxi passes right by. Late afternoon is best for the golden colour on the sandstone. There is no shade in the courts but plenty in the Hypostyle Hall.
