These two seated colossi of Amenhotep III have stood on the edge of the cultivation on the West Bank for nearly 3,400 years, marking the entrance to his mortuary temple — which was once the largest of them all, but was systematically robbed for stone by later pharaohs and eventually vanished. The statues took their Greek name Memnon from a Roman legend that identified them with a hero of the Trojan War, and became a tourist attraction under the Caesars: after a 27 BC earthquake, the northern colossus emitted a musical sound at dawn, and Hadrian himself came to hear it.
There isn't much to do here beyond looking, taking photographs, and reading the informative panels. But it's genuinely impressive — 720 tonnes each, cut from a single block of quartzite quarried near Cairo and transported 700 kilometres. Behind the colossi, active excavations are slowly recovering the buried mortuary temple, and additional colossal statues of the queen mother Tiye and of Sekhmet have been re-erected on the site. You can walk close to them but not touch, and there's a small fenced viewing area with an information kiosk.
As every West Bank tour stops here first, arrive very early (before 8:00) or very late (after 16:00) for photos without a coach's worth of people in shot. There's no ticket, no gate, no closing time — just pull up, look, and go. Local kids will offer to sell postcards and small souvenirs; $1 is fair. Combine with any West Bank itinerary — it's on the road to everything.
